A house needing a storm damage roof replacement - Showalter Roofing

In Missouri’s winters, storm damage can wreck havoc on a roof. Furthermore, conditions like snow, ice, freezing temperatures, and poor ventilation can accelerate the amount of damage. At Showalter Roofing, we received a call about a home needing a roof replacement due to last year’s storm damage.

Storm Damage Roof Replacement In Progress...

We placed plywood against the house to protect the garage doors from debris, then went to work tearing off the old roof and laying out the underlayment. In addition, we also installed ice and water guards in the valleys. This is a special type of underlayment to protect the roof from rain, ice, and snow.

Roof Ventilation

Roof Ventilation   What is Roof Ventilation? Holes for Roof Ventilation Placement

Replacing a roof goes beyond replacing shingles or rotting plywood. Roofing ventilation vents are often commonly replaced as well. Due to their nature, these roof vents bake in the sun and become brittle over time. Therefore, we install metal roof vents as part of our roofing replacement process.

When it comes to maintaining a healthy and efficient home, proper roof ventilation often goes overlooked. However, this crucial aspect of your roofing system plays a vital role in protecting your home and ensuring its longevity. At Showalter Roofing, we understand the significance of a well-ventilated roof and want to share our expertise with you.

What is Roof Ventilation?

Roof ventilation is the process of allowing air to circulate through your attic space. This circulation is essential for regulating temperature and moisture levels in your attic, which directly impacts the overall health of your roof and home.

Temperature Control: During hot summer months, a poorly ventilated attic can trap heat, turning it into an oven that radiates warmth into your living spaces. This not only makes your home uncomfortable but also forces your HVAC system to work harder, increasing energy costs. Proper ventilation helps maintain consistent indoor temperatures, reducing drafts in winter and overheating in summer.

Moisture Management: In colder months, inadequate ventilation can lead to moisture buildup. This excess moisture can cause a host of problems, including mold growth, wood rot, and damage to your roof's structure. Furthermore, adequate ventilation helps prevent the formation of ice dams, which can cause significant damage to your roof and gutters.

Class 3 Shingles: TAMKO TITAN XT

Beyond water guards and proper ventilation, the type and quality of shingles are incredibly important. Shingles are the first line of defense against impacts, water, and the sun’s intensity. For this project, we used TAMKO TITAN XT - class 3 asphalt shingles. We encourage homeowners to install class 3 shingles as most insurance companies will lower their premiums.

What are Class 3 Shingles?

Class 3 shingles are a type of asphalt roof shingle designed to provide enhanced durability and impact resistance. This makes them more resilient than Class 1 and Class 2 shingles, but not as durable as Class 4 shingles.

Class 3 shingles are often chosen by homeowners and businesses in areas that occasionally experience moderate hailstorms. They provide a good balance between durability and cost, making them suitable for regions with occasional severe weather but not extreme conditions.
